Information literacy
Library information knowledge encompasses all elements of information literacy, with a focus on using the library and the information accessible through it. Information literacy is the ability to recognize and define a problem, acquire, critically evaluate, and apply information from various sources. Information-literate users understand the economic, cultural, legal, and social significance of information, regard it as a foundation for lifelong learning, and use it ethically and legally.
It includes understanding and creatively using information, also conveyed through modern technology, contemporary computer, and communication resources. When designing user education programs, the library assesses the needs, interests, and abilities of users, as well as their levels of information literacy, paying particular attention to reading literacy, which remains the most important component of information literacy.
The information literacy program prepared by the library is tied to the use of the library, but it is not limited to it, since information is not a monopoly of the library. The public library serves as a starting point for training in the use of other libraries, museums, galleries, expert systems, and various databases as sources of information.
The library, either independently or in collaboration with external providers, organizes and conducts training for the independent use of library services and its information resources, as well as online resources, software, and hardware. It assists and advises users in the independent use of computer and other information and communication technologies. Through online media, it provides access to training recordings, learning modules, guides to information resources, and educational programs. The library also provides appropriate spaces and equipment—computer workstations with printing and scanning capabilities, suitable seating and desks, and rooms for training and education equipped with the necessary technology. Users are also directed to other relevant educational opportunities and training programs.
